90 second podcast of Patti and I releasing a captured mouse back into the wild. At the moment of release instead of running away, the mouse runs right at Patti who lets out a yelp of fear. (audio clip is part of a larger blog entry at http://billandpatti.com )

a 360 degree panorama from atop the hill above the house taken at sunset on the summer solstice 2006. Corn and soybeans are the mainstay crop here in western Iowa. The farm is nestled in the middle of the Loess Hills where the sometime steep hills can only be used as pastureland and timberland.

Just to get out of the city, Patti and I jumped in the car and headed for the Atlantic ocean for a little overnight adventure. While walking the boardwalk at Ocean City, Md we came across a dozen Miss USA contestants making an ad for a jewelry store. Too bad it was so chilly or perhaps they would have all worn their itsy-bitsy, yellow poka dot bikinis and made my little video at least worth watching.

The 9 floor, 270 unit apartment complex that Patti and I live in has recently spent a ton of money on a new, very sensitive fire alarm system. Perhaps a little too sensitive. It keeps going off when there is no fire.. no danger.. just some dust in the underground parking garage. The DC Fire trucks arrived the first two times it happened and the fire persons were none to happy about it either. Fire is serious business.

This is a personal, friend/family slideshow of our wedding day and the day after at the Ocean City, Md. Beach. When Patti and I get really old and can't even remember our own names, we can at least play this 3 minute piece, and in remembering the day, and how young we looked "way back then in 2005".. just maybe we can get all dreamy-eyed at one another once again. Music by the great Sachmo himself.. Mr Louis Armstrong. I hope he won't mind if we borrow a clip of his most famous piece...

This is my Uncle Dinty Huth inside the Arcade with Aunt Lu, his sister inside the change booth and probably smoking her beloved Salem cigarettes. Uncle Dinty was the best uncle a young kid could ever have, who also had the keys to every arcade game in the place and on slow days would let us kids have free games (on any of the machines that did not award prizes, of course). Our most played games were the shuffle boards (which he is leaning against) and timed shooting-gallery game that we all...

Stand "A" refreshment stand was located on the hill overlooking the park. To the right was the hotel and behind me (and a bit to my left) as I snapped this photo was the Starlight Ballroom. The thing we park kids loved best about Stand "A" was the hot, greasy french fries that one could buy for a quarter. We'd buy some fries and a coke and go to back and just hang out, watching the people and rides and below us, dipping our fries into great puddles of ketchup. Good times now...

A favorite game for years (decades?) at Chippewa was Skeeball. Stick your dime in slot, pull back the lever and 10 wooden balls were released to you. Roll the ball up the alley and launch it into different holes which gave different scores depending on which hole it landed into. Some folks became expert at it. This game was owned and operated by Phil Jacobs during my time (1955-63) and later Tom and Suzie Huth (pictured) acquired the game.

During the latter years of the parks' life, ways of doing business changed. A chain link fence now encircled the whole park and admission was charged for entering. Stand "A" is on top of the hill. The coasters first turn is seen on the left. Ferris wheel and "the Rockets" can be seen in the distance.

This was taken just below Stand "A" and looking down upon the midway. The park is in process of opening for the day and few people have arrived.

Adjoining the south edge of the park was the Chippewa open air theater. During company picnics there was always performances of one kind or another throughout the weekend afternoons, often rock & roll bands.

I wanted to get a couple of photos of people riding the coaster so I walked back into the woods nearing the "turnaround", waited for the coaster to come by with a load of thrill seekers, leaned over the guard railing and snapped their photo as they zoomed by.

After nighttime showers, the park opens up. Now in the parks post glory days, some people still come to spend their saturdays or sundays but nowhere near as many, as it once was.

This is some kind pillar that the Chippewa powers erected. I snapped the image in 1974 but now I have no recollection of what the pillar was about. If anybody knows, send me an email at bbouslaugh@yahoo.com and I'll tell about here.

This photo is of the park's rifle range and adjoining concessions during the parks latter years. The grounds and buildings had become quite shappy and unkempt when I visited in 1974. (I believe the park officially closed in '78). The rifle range used to use real 22 calibre rifles in previous years, but changed over to air rifles as is seen in this picture. (and not nearly as much fun).

The Park's trailer court that housed employer and employee families was located south of the park and near the edge of the lake. Because of unusually heavy rains that summer, the lake filled to such an extent that it flooded into the court. A new trailer court was subsequently established a short distance away and further on up the hill. (ps: I typed in a mistake on the year 1954 but cannot correct it here on the Internet Archive. The year of this photo is 1957. bill bouslaugh)

This road leads south from the park and runs beside the open air theater and the lake, both located to the left in this photo. Park cottages were to the right. Further on is the trailer court where employers & employees families lived during the summer months. The young lady in blue jeans (to the left) in my cousin Kathy Huth.

This is the inside of Russ Reynold's photo concession at Chippewa lake park in c.1958. The picture is of me (bill bouslaugh) as a young teenager. I was a "park kid" from 1955 to 1963.

18 year old Jesse from Eugene,Oregon (a friend of my daughter)had never been sleigh riding before visiting us on our Iowa farm. This 15 second clip is his first ride in the snow on a ski-sled. He flies over a terrace and actually manages to make it to the bottom of the hill without crashing. It's a moment of absolute pride and happiness for him. We made a memory, Jesse! ..and here it is.. just for you. :-)

I think Patti could have been a cow in a previous life.. while she and I and the dog were walking a country road in Iowa, we came across a small herd of cattle. Patti walked over to them and began talking to them.. in cow talk! The funny thing was, that she didn't know I was videoing her until she had finished her speech to them. This went on for at least another minute after my still camera with video, unfortunately, ran out of memory. It makes one wonder about her sometimes..
